Solas Run & Walk takes to the streets of Dungarvan for the first time

On September 6th the Solas Cancer Support Centre’s west Waterford services celebrates 6 years of operations based in the Alternative Health Clinic in Dungarvan. Over this time the service has supported over 700 families. In marking the occasion, the charity is announcing that the hugely successful Run and Walk for Life will host a Dungarvan event on Saturday 8th October. This 10K walk will start at 11am from Walton Park on the day, is routed along the Greenway and with the finish line in the Park.

Board Trustee Jenny Beresford acknowledges the charities commitment to growing the west Waterford Service. ‘We have been so delighted over the last six years to be based in the Alternative Health Clinic, Main Street each Monday to offer services in Dungarvan. In 2020 the Solas Cancer Support Centre took up occupancy of an additional room within the clinic on a full-time basis. This initiative reflected the goal and commitment of the charity to develop and progress its service to meet the growing need within the community of West Waterford. Hosting an event for the Run and Walk for Life on October 8th here in Dungarvan cements this commitment and we look forward to seeing the iconic orange T shirts along the Greenway on the day’.

Speaking at this years launch, Gwen Daniels, General Manager, UPMC Whitfield Hospital, said; “As the main sponsor of the Run and Walk for Life, UPMC is delighted to partner with the Solas Cancer Support Centre again this year.  For over a decade, patients across the south east have received oncology care at UPMC facilities, and our on going partnership with the Solas Cancer Support Centre and our support of the Run and Walk for life, guarantees that they receive the comprehensive care necessary throughout their cancer journey’.

Media partner Beat is pleased to be continuing its longstanding partnership with the charity and CEO Gabrielle Cummins explains more: “We are so excited to be welcoming back the sea of orange to the streets of the region.  Beat has partnered with Solas Cancer Support Centre for over a decade and we’re very proud to be associated with an initiative that is so widely supported among the community’.

The 2022 event will offer three options to those taking part- the main 10k Run and Walk on Sunday 9th October starting at 12.30pm on the Quay in Waterford City, a 10K walk along the Greenway from Walton Park in Dungarvan starting at 11am on Saturday 8th October and the popular virtual option is also available. This year the organisers hope to encourage family and friends from around the world to also take part in the virtual option with the aim of seeing the iconic orange UPMC sponsored t-shirts across the globe. Workplaces and schools are also being encouraged to once again #GoOrangeForSolas.
