Green Light for Solas Centre! - press release 26/04/2010

The biggest charity project in the south east - the building of the new South Eastern Cancer Foundation’s Solas Centre - a state-of-the-art cancer support centre, has got the go-ahead. Building is to start in May and is expected to open in Spring 2011. It will provide new facilities for counselling, relaxation therapies and support to cancer patients and their families.

Announcing the decision of the Board of SECF to appoint contractors, SECF Chairman Iain Munro said “ We are all delighted to be able to go ahead and build this much needed centre. It’s a tribute to all those who have volunteered long hours on the design team, in fundraising, and those who have donated so generously”

The SECF board have appointed Nevin Construction Ltd of Waterford as main contractor, CTS of Waterford as the Electrical contractor and Blanchfield Plumbing and Heating of Kilkenny as Mechanical Contractor.

During Construction the project will provide much needed construction jobs for Waterford and the south east region. Work will now begin in May and is expected to take nine months to complete.

Mr. Munro added, “The SECF would like to sincerely thank all those who took part in the design of the new building, and in particular for their hard work over the last few months on a revised specification and for negotiating substantial savings for the charity”

“We would like especially thank our design team who have so generously volunteered their services - C.J. Falconer and Associates - our Architects, Duffy MacCann - our interior design architects, Malone O’Regan - our structural engineers, Synergy Engineering - our Mechanical & Electrical engineers, G. Sexton & Partners, SafetyDotCom - Our Health and Safety Consultants, Michael Ash - Landscaping design and NRT - our Quantity Surveyors”

He also acknowledged the generous assistance of Nolan Farrell Goff - for Conveyancing, Design and Display - for signage and ThreeSixty for our Solas Logo, Kenny Stephenson Chapman for legal advice and Waterford City Council for leasing the site.

He added “We have had help from too many people to mention, all of whom have got us to this stage” “As the SECF is entirely funded by generous donations, we will continue to need fundraising to furnish and finish out the building and to run our support services for patients this year and in the years ahead.”

Mr. Munro said “The SECF knows the needs of cancer patients are great, and this project is testament to the wish of all of us, our families and the community, to support our loved ones through the tough times. The Solas Centre will not only provide excellent services but also be a beacon of hope for cancer patients and their families in the south east”

Solas Centre update March 8th, 2010

We in the South Eastern Cancer Foundation would like to thank you sincerely for your ongoing support in fundraising for the running costs of the Foundation since 2001 and in your efforts over the last 18 months or so to raise funds for the construction of our new home, the Solas Centre.

For the last few years we have provided support for cancer patients and their families from a small house in Earlscourt, Waterford. But space and facilities has been very limited.

Almost all our lives have been touched by cancer in some way or another and we all understand the lonely fearful experience that it can be. In our new home, we will continue to offer hope, support and comfort enabling people to cope with dignity and enable them to get on with the many positive things in their lives. We will provide counselling, group support, relaxation and art therapies and it is our mission to support person diagnosed with cancer in the region and their families also.

It is with great pride that we share with you the news that we have tendered for the construction of the Solas Centre on our Farronshoneen Site that was kindly donated by Waterford City Council. As the SECF is an independent Charity every cent for the Solas Centre has been raised by YOU, the people of the South East. This has been achieved by the most ingenious combination of fund raising events such as pub quizzes, fleadhs, fashion shows, parties, Santa dashes etc.

We expect to be able to start work on the Solas Centre this Spring. We hope that the remaining amount needed can be raised over the coming months to finish the centre and fund services to people affected by cancer.

Without you, the Solas Centre would remain an aspiration. With your continued support, it will become a beacon of hope for all of us.

Thanks from all at the SECF, Iain Munro, Chairman, SECF
